Randy Yamanaka's Story

“In 2002, I donated bone marrow to a child with leukemia...the Blood Center was with me every step of the way.”

My name is Randy, and I’m proud to say that I am a blood and marrow donor for Puget Sound Blood Center. In 2002, I donated bone marrow to a child with leukemia. He was only a year old when he was diagnosed. I remember when I got that important call asking for my help. I desperately wanted to reach out and help this child in any way I could. Of course I agreed to donate.

A year later, I was able to learn that my recipient’s name was Luke, he lived in San Jose, and he was recovering from his illness. It wasn’t a quick recovery, and there were complications. But he did make a full recovery! My family became close to Luke and his family, and my spirit soars when they send me photographs of him. Now he’s a healthy and happy 10-year-old. He loves playing soccer and basketball with his schoolmates. It is joyous for me to have had this opportunity to work with the Blood Center and have such a positive role in Luke’s recovery.

I felt the Blood Center was with me every step of the way. I would urge others to join the Marrow Registry, too. There very well could be someone who needs you right now.
